Eagle Valley girls soccer steals senior celebration
The Aspen Times
The Aspen High School girls soccer team celebrated senior day at the final regular-season match Thursday afternoon.
But Mariel Gutierrez and the Eagle Valley Devils had a senior celebration of their own in mind.
Gutierrez, an all-state senior and the leading scorer in Colorado prep girls soccer, scored three goals in the opening 21 minutes Thursday, and the Class 4A Devils cruised past the 3A Skiers 6-1 at Aspen School District Stadium.
Gutierrez, who has signed to play at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley next year, scored on Eagle Valley’s first shot of the game — a blast from the right side of the box.
Her goal came after the Skiers had ripped off four early shots in the nonconference match.
Five minutes after her first goal, Gutierrez scored again when she used her speed to slice through the Aspen defense.
Another three minutes later, she scored on a nifty left-footed roller — a hat trick and a 3-0 Eagle Valley lead with 17:40 to play in the opening half.
The Eagle Valley senior nearly scored a fourth goal in the opening half, but her header off a corner kick just missed.
Teammate Kaitlyn Borah didn’t miss when she collected a through ball and dashed past the Aspen goalkeeper to tap in another lefty goal.
Jesi Adams set up Madison Baxter for Eagle Valley’s fifth goal and a 5-0 halftime lead.
Adams finished the scoring for the Devils on a penalty kick goal after she was taken down right in front of the Aspen goal early in the second half.
The Skiers broke through with a goal from freshman Chelsea Moore on a long-range shot with 16 minutes to play.
She controlled the ball after Aspen’s Erin Spence had challenged Eagle Valley freshman goalkeeper Brennecke Gale.
With the ball bounding free, Moore launched in the Skiers’ final home goal of the season.
Aspen finished with nine shots against the Devils, who totaled 20.
The tune-up match against the 4A-playoff bound Devils will set up the Aspen girls for the Class 3A state playoff draw over the weekend.
The Skiers, 10-4 overall, 7-3 in 3A league play, are expected to draw a first-round 3A playoff game on the Front Range.
Eagle Valley (12-3 overall, 9-3 in 4A league play) is expected to draw a high seed for the Class 4A state playoffs next week.
Gutierrez now has 32 goals this season to lead Class 4A and the state.
Gutierrez and the Devils are coached by Stephen Baxter.
The Skiers, coached by John Gillies, recognized their five seniors in pregame festivities on senior day Thursday.
Jessica Coxon, Katherine Milette, Marta Galambos, Erin Spence and Maria King are the AHS seniors honored at their final home match.
