NEW CASTLE, Colo. – Coal Ridge avenged its only loss of the season with a 4-0 girls soccer victory over Aspen on Tuesday afternoon in New Castle.

The Titans, 10-1-0 overall and 8-0-0 in the Western Slope League, broke the scoreless tie with a goal by Paige Ryan in the 28th minute.

Kelsey Fauser added a hat trick with her third goal in the 79th minute as the Titans moved into position to win the league title.

“I’m heartbroken,” Aspen head coach John Gillies said. “They were certainly the better team.”

He said the Skiers struggled to get back in a flow of the match after coming off a week of experiential education (Ex Ed).

“They were out riding bikes, canoeing, climbing mountains … using all sorts of different muscles,” Gillies said.

“Individually, we did OK. But we weren’t working as a team,” he said.

The Skiers, he said, were in good position, trailing by one goal late in the first half.

Coal Ridge scored two quick goals before halftime.

The Skiers also were without Katherine Milette (illness) on Tuesday afternoon.

Coal Ridge had 20 shots, including 12 on goal.

Aspen’s first shot came late in the second half.

The Skiers fell to 5-2-2 overall, 4-2-0 in league.
