Carbondale’s Zamansky to raceboth World Cups at Park City

Aspen Times Staff Report

PARK CITY, Utah ? Carbondale’s Jake Zamansky will start in both of America’s opening World Cup races this weekend at Park City Mountain Resort.

The 21-year-old Zamansky, who made his World Cup debut in giant slalom last month at Soelden, Austria, will be racing in the GS Friday and his first World Cup slalom on Sunday.

U.S. Ski Team alpine coaches finalized their lineups for the men’s and women’s World Cup giant slaloms and slaloms earlier this week. Two Park City skiers ? T.J. Lanning in GS and Bryon Friedman in slalom ? will make their World Cup debut.

Men’s head coach Phil McNichol, who already had announced seven starters for the men’s GS Friday, said the U.S. Ski Team would have six men competing Sunday in the slalom, which concludes the weekend. “And we may add one other, possibly two, to the start list,” McNichol said.

Perhaps as late as race time, a decision will be made on whether Bode Miller of Franconia, N.H., will compete, McNichol said. Miller, a double-medalist at the Salt Lake City Olympics, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Friday in Vail.

“The medical staff will check see everything’s okay. If they’re comfortable with his recovery, then fine,” McNichol said. “It’s a medical call, not my call, not Bode’s.”

Marjan Cernigoj, the U.S. women’s head coach, said five American women will be racing in Thursday’s giant slalom, four in Saturday’s slalom. Four-event racer Caroline Lalive of Steamboat Springs will race the GS, but not the slalom, while recuperating from a broken left index finger.

After Park City, the women head to Aspen for the opening World Cup super G of the season Nov. 29 and a slalom Nov. 30. The men face the first speed races of the young season at Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies.
