Boys soccer: League teams fall in state semifinals

Two boys soccer teams from the Western Slope League advanced all the way to the state semifinals.
But both squads were denied a spot in the state championship match in Class 3A.
Vail Mountain School, the No. 4 seed in the 32-team state playoff bracket, lost a 2-0 thriller to Kent Denver on Thursday in the 3A state semifinals, played at All City Stadium.
Defending state champion Kent Denver scored one goal in the first half and another in the second in the shutout victory over the Gore Rangers, who won the regular-season title in the Western Slope League in a tiebreaker over Basalt.

Vail Mountain School closed the season 16-2-1 after Thursday’s loss to Kent Denver, 18-0-1 overall.
Kent Denver opened the state playoffs with a tense 2-0 victory over No. 32 seed Aspen. Kent’s first goal came with just 12 minutes to play in the playoff opener.
Kent Denver defeated Sheridan 3-0 in the second round. Sheridan had opened with a 3-2 win over Basalt.
Vail Mountain School opened the playoffs with a 3-0 win over Crested Butte.
The Gore Rangers topped the Vanguard Academy 3-2 in the second round.
Vail Mountain School topped previously uinbeaten Pagosa Springs 1-0 to reach the state semifinals.
In the other 3A state semifinal played Thursday evening in Denver, Coal Ridge of the Western Slope League fell to No. 6 seed Fountain Valley 2-1.
Coal Ridge, the No. 18 seed in the playoffs, upset Denver Christian 5-0 in the first round before shocking No. 2 overall seed Liberty Common of Fort Collins 1-0.
The Titans then knocked off No. 10 seed Salida 2-1 to reach the final four. Coal Ridge finished the season 12-6-1.
Fountain Valley is 15-2-2 entering the state championship match against Kent Denver. That’s set for Saturday in Denver.
