All it took was a phone call from a devoted young fan. And now, a U.S. Olympian is heading to Snowmass next month to play a round of golf and support a worthy cause.

Ski racer Bode Miller was on the line when the son of a local cancer survivor asked if Miller would support Aspen’s Cancer Survivor Center for Health and Wellbeing. The 2003 World Cup overall champion, 2006 Olympian and avid golfer agreed to help. Miller will host the Bode Miller and Olympic Friends Golf Tournament on Sept. 16. All proceeds will benefit the center, whose mission is to increase the quality of life for cancer survivors. The newly formed center provides scientifically based exercise programming, nutritional guidance and support services to survivors at little to no cost. The center’s goal is to provide its services to 100 clients in the area during its first year, then branch out on the national level.

The tournament will include a golf pro clinic followed by a four-person scramble, a silent auction and cocktail party. Other Olympians are also expected to take part. The cost to participate is $500 per person. In addition, those wishing to honor a cancer survivor can sponsor a golf hole in their name for a donation of $500.

Those interested in volunteering at the event can contact event chair Kathleen Callahan at To donate to the center, contact Amy Covington at more information, go to or call 920-5836.
