Aspen senior and birthday boy Moss Schermerhorn scored a game-high 19 points as the AHS Skiers downed rival Basalt 57-47 on the road last night at the BHS Bighouse.

Eight Aspen players scored in what AHS coach Steve Ketchum called “a great, great win for the Skiers” that avenged an earlier loss to Basalt at home.

“We weren’t real prepared for Basalt last time, I think we took ’em a little lightly,” Ketchum said, “but the kids were prepared this time and they executed very well tonight.”

Aspen led 33-23 at the half, then broke out for 20 points in the third quarter to open the fourth with a 44-27 lead. “We played well at both ends of the court, we looked confident, we pushed the ball ” we’re feeling good,” said Ketchum.

Schermerhorn, who turned 18 yesterday, led the way for the Aspen attack. Aaron Parada, Brock Strasbourger and Coulter VanDomelen all chipped in nine points, and Doog White, in his second game since returning from a broken leg, added six points. “It’s great to have him back,” Ketchum said.

Cody Burkholder led the Longhorns with 14 points, followed by Darren Duroux with 12.

“Heck, for us to have 33 points at halftime,” Ketchum said, “we’ve had games where we’ve scored in the thirties, total. That means we’re doing something good.”

Aspen improved to 6-4 in Class 3A Western Slope League play and 9-7 overall. Basalt dropped to 5-5 in league and 5-9 overall.

“It’s a great confidence boost for us,” Ketchum continued. “This shoots us into third place in the league and now we’ve got a big game coming up against No. 2 Eagle Valley at home.”

On Friday at 7 p.m., Aspen tips off with Eagle Valley. Meanwhile, Basalt travels to Cedaredge for its next action, also Friday night.

“Basalt coach Mike Green is an excellent coach and his kids will definitely bounce back,” said Ketchum. “Hopefully, we’ll see them in the playoffs.”
