BHS wrestlers wrap up regular season Saturday

Aspen Times Staff Report

The Basalt High wrestling team travels to Eagle Valley on Saturday for its final tune-up before the Feb. 13-14 regional tournament in Montrose.

The Basalt grapplers, who have struggled with injuries and eligibility issues of late, will face Olathe and Hotchkiss in dual meets at Eagle Valley. Last Saturday at BHS, with only six of 14 weight classes filled, Basalt lost three consecutive dual-meet matches to Cedaredge (30-23), Gunnison (30-11) and Eagle Valley (42-22).

“I’m real thin right now, with several guys out with injuries, but all my guys will be ready to go for regionals,” said Rob Grumley, the Basalt coach. “We could bring some guys back this weekend, and that’s being on the safe side so they’re ready for regionals.”

Basalt heavyweight Mike Zerfoss was 3-0 last Saturday in matches against Cedaredge, Gunnison and Eagle Valley wrestlers, Grumley said. And Chris Black, at 135 pounds, and Matt Aten, at 140, both finished the day at 2-1. “They wrestled well,” the coach said.

“Three of my better kids are out right now and they’re all seniors, so it hurts,” Grumley said, referring to Mike Buster, Kaleb Nye and Garrett Jammaron. “This weekend, we’ll make the best of it.

“But I should have 11 weights filled for the regional tournament, and for sure Aten, Zerfoss and Jammaron should get good seeds and have a shot of going to the state tournament,” Grumley continued.
