BHS wrestlers weather flu, Buena

With four seniors out with the flu last weekend, a demilitarized Basalt High wrestling team eked out two ties, and suffered three losses, at the Buena Vista Dual-Meet Tournament last Saturday.

Basalt lost to Buena Vista 40-30 in meet No. 1; lost 60-18 and 69-6 against top teams Florence and Pagosa Springs, respectively; then rebounded to tie Steamboat Springs and Lake County by a score of 30 all.

“It wasn’t that horrible,” said Rob Grumley, the Basalt coach. “Our younger guys did real well. Against Florence and Pagosa Springs, it was a spanking, but they’re both real tough.

“And to tie up the last two, it was a moral victory for sure. Our kids got a better chance to get in some mat time, which is where the experience comes from. I was happy with the way the wrestled overall.”

Mike Buster, at 215 pounds, and Matt Aten, at 140, both went 4-1 on the day, and James Nelson, at 130, was 3-2.

Heavyweights Jeff Seaver and Mike Zerfoss both won one match, and recorded two other wins by forfeit, Grumley said.

“We got hammered with the flu last week and my four seniors were out,” the coach said. “So we struggled as a team, even though the kids actually didn’t wrestle bad, we just had a lot of open weights.”

This Saturday, with the senior top guns restored to heath, the BHS grapplers will travel to Gunnison for another dual-meet format tourney.

“Everyone’s healthy, everyone was at practice tonight and we’re looking forward to having a good tournament,” the coach said.
