BHS volleyball drops pair of matches

The Aspen High School volleyball team dispatched downvalley rival Basalt High Friday night in its first league test of the season.

The visiting AHS girls defeated the Longhorns in straight sets, 8-15 and 9-15. However, first-year BHS Coach Billy Miller reported that Basalt managed to hold its own against the defending Class 3A Western Slope champs.

Miller, who comes to the Longhorns this year after a stint with the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club in southern California, took over a struggling BHS team with just two returning varsity players. Considering the fact that Basalt is attempting to rebuild a varsity squad, the team fared well in Friday’s matchup, he said.

“I thought it went pretty well. They played very tight as a group,” Miller said of Basalt’s efforts. “Our passing is what did us in. Every team that loses, loses because of their passing.”

Basalt collected a second loss Saturday afternoon while hosting Cedaredge. The Longhorns were defeated in straight sets for a second day in a row, 2-15 and 4-15.

Though the weekend proved disappointing, Miller reported that he sees “tremendous improvement” among the Longhorns as the season progresses.

“We’re working on a new rotation and a new lineup. We’re trying to maximize our outside hitters, the big girls on the left side,” Miller said of the loss. “We weren’t quite ready for them [Cedaredge]. The rotation would have worked, but we need time to practice it.”
