Basketball: Road win for Aspen boys
The Aspen Times
The Aspen High School boys basketball team closed out the early portion of the schedule with a big road win at Vail Christian.
The Skiers, rolling to a big halftime lead, eventually defeated Vail Christian 59-51.
“The first half was probably our best basketball of the year,” Aspen head coach Rolf Schildman said after the Friday night road victory. “I think we had almost 40 (points) at halftime.”
Schildman said the Vail Christian gym is a difficult place to play, unusual by most high school gymnasium standards.
““It’s a hard place to play for sure,” Schildman said.
He said Vail Christian turned up the pressure in the second half, and his Skiers experienced a bit of foul trouble.
And Vail Christian got very hot.
“Everything was going in for them,” Schildman said.
But the Skiers converted enough foul shots down the stretch for the win, Schildman said..
They could have made the mission easier, he said, by converting more free throws.
Jack Rosenthal led all scorers with 19 points for Aspen.
Tristan Niskanen scored 12 points for Aspen as did AJ Dedrick.
Will Hazen gave the Skiers four players in double figures with 10 points at Vail Christian.
Quinton O’Keeffe, James Kistner and Zack George scored two each for the Skiers, who are 3-2 heading into the holiday break.
“I feel good about where we are right now,” Schildman said. “We’re 3-2 and our two losses came to that tough Rifle (4A) team. I couldn’t be happier with where we are heading into league.”
In the girls varsity game, Vail Christian topped the Aspen girls 26-15.
Aspen head coach Greg Peterson said the Skiers struggled from the floor.
“And we had far too many turnovers,” he said.
Cliara Sanchez scored seven to lead the Skiers (1-4).
Kass Baker led Vail Christian (4-2) with seven points.
The Aspen High basketball teams will return to action Jan. 8 when they host Roaring Fork in the opening Western Slope League games.
