The Basalt High School boys basketball team won the big one.
The Longhorns beat Western Slope League-leading Coal Ridge in a 47-44 thriller at the Big House, handing the Titans their first conference loss Saturday.
“Defense, defense,” Basalt head coach Danny Martinez said. “Our defense … was the difference.”
He said the Longhorns played hard in the matchup against the conference leader.
“They played their hearts out,” he said after the Longhorns rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half.
Mike Glen scored 19 points for the Longhorns, including a bevy of free throws.
Wade Soho scored 10 points. Pedro Rivera scored five, and Pablo Rivera scored four.
“Raul Torres got in foul trouble. But he was there for us at crunch time,” Martinez said.
Combined with Friday night’s 61-36 road win at Olathe, the Basalt boys moved up to 7-2 in the Western Slope League and 10-2 overall.
They trail only Grand Valley (7-1, 11-2 overall) and Coal Ridge (7-1, 8-5 overall) in the boys standings.
The Basalt girls battled against Coal Ridge on Saturday, eventually falling, 50-38.
A night earlier, the Longhorns lost, 71-23, at powerhouse Olathe.
“We … were up two at halftime,” Basalt coach Josh Mink said. “But hats off to Coal Ridge. They played a great second half.”
The Titans rallied with a 30-16 second-half surge.
“Carsyn Knotts … was a great player today,” Mink said. She scored 15 points with eight rebounds.
Kaity Johnson added nine for the Longhorns.
Mink said Samantha Kummer stepped up from junior varsity and played well for Basalt (2-7 in league, 2-10 overall).
The Basalt girls will host West Grand on Friday before traveling to Moffat County on Saturday.
