Basketball: Basalt, Aspen square off this weekend

The Western Slope League’s top boys basketball teams will square off this weekend.

Basalt and Aspen high schools will be right in the middle of the action.

The Aspen boys will host league-leading Coal Ridge on Friday night. And on Saturday, the Skiers will travel to play Basalt, the current second-place team in the boys WSL.

The Basalt boys, meanwhile, will host Grand Valley tonight and Aspen on Saturday afternoon.

Grand Valley is tied with the Longhorns in the loss column in second place in the conference.

Coal Ridge’s boys will visit Aspen with a 4-0 league record, 5-4 overall.

Aspen counters with a 4-4 overall record, 1-2 in the Western Slope League.

The bulk of the Coal Ridge losses have come against bigger schools — Rifle, Delta, Grand Junction Central.

The Titan’s league record includes wins over Gunnison, Grand Valley, Basalt and Moffat County.

Coal Ridge beat the Grand Valley boys 73-71 in overtime on Jan. 9.

The Basalt boys will host a doubleheader weekend with a 6-1 overall record, 4-1 in conference.

The Longhorns are coming off conference wins over Moffat County and Gunnison last weekend.

Grand Valley, Basalt’s opponent Friday night, defeated the Skiers 70-52 in Aspen last weekend to improve to 7-2 overall, 3-1 in conference.

On Saturday, Basalt again will host with rival Aspen visiting. The boys varsity game will start about 4 p.m. after the girls varsity game at the Big House.

In girls basketball, the Aspen Skiers will be out for their first league win of the season. The Aspen girls (0-3 in the Western Slope League and 1-7 overall) will host Coal Ridge at 5:30 p.m. today. They will travel to Basalt on Saturday.

The Coal Ridge girls are 2-2 in conference, 3-6 overall.

Moffat County and Grand Valley lead the girls standings with matching 4-0 marks. Grand Valley’s girls are 8-1 overall; Moffat County’s girls are 7-2.

Olathe is 3-2 and next in the league standings.

The Basalt girls are 1-4 in league, 1-6 overall.

The following weekend, the Aspen High School basketball teams will face two road trips for league games.

The Skiers will play at Moffat County in Craig on Jan. 29 before traveling to Carbondale to face Roaring Fork on Jan. 30, the Saturday of the Winter X Games.

The Basalt High School teams will travel to Olathe on Jan. 29.

The next day, the Longhorns will host Coal Ridge as the second round of play begins in the Western Slope League.
