Basalt’s Jake Levy voted lineman of year
The Aspen Times
Basalt’s Jake Levy saved the best for last.
The Basalt High School senior wrapped up his decorated career with his most dynamic game in the regular-season finale against rival Aspen.
Levy led the Longhorns to a 28-22 comeback victory over the Skiers.
In the process, Levy secured his place on the All-Western Slope North League first team in voting by the conference coaches.
“Jake will play in the all-state game this summer,” Basalt head coach Carl Frerichs said after the all-league honors were announced. “He had a great year.”
Levy was voted the conference lineman of the year after leading the Longhorns to wins this year over Aspen, Coal Ridge and Grand Valley.
Levy was one of five Longhorns voted to the all-league first team for football.
The BHS all-conference selections are:
Nakagawa is a versatile senior who played receiver, defensive back and served as the Longhorns’ kick returner.
Vigil, a staple in the Basalt backfield, also is a senior.
Guerrero, another of the Basalt runners, is a senior as are Hooker and Jake Levy.
Younger brother Miles Levy was one of five Basalt player named to the all-league honorable mention list.
The honorable mention Longhorns are:
Miles Levy is just a sophomore. Lumsden and White also are sophomores.
Flores, a junior, also will return to the Longhorns next season.
Huerta is a senior.
Frerichs said he was extremely pleased with the way the Longhorns closed the season. He said they had to overcome a variety of injuries through the season.
“This was a good group … on and off the field,” Frerichs said.
He said the 28-22 win over Aspen was a great way for the seniors to go out.
And, he said, a win over Roaring Fork might have changed the configuration for the postseason.
The Longhorns lost 14-10 at Roaring Fork.
Basalt piled up a big 30-6 win over Coal Ridge. The Horns finished 3-6 overall, 2-3 in the first year of the new Western Slope North League.
