Basalt wrestling splits in Thursday triangular with Summit, Eagle Valley

The Basalt High School wrestling team hosted Summit County and Eagle Valley on Thursday in its final home duals of the season, splitting the contests.
The Longhorns had their hands full against a good Eagle Valley team, losing 63-15. The Devils went 8-2 in contested matches and had three forfeit victories.
Basalt’s two wins came from Ruben Samuelson over Brandon St. Onge at 126 pounds (fall 5:05) and from Jose Castorena over Brian Garcia at 182 pounds (Dec. 6-1). BHS also had a forfeit victory.
Against Summit County, Basalt won 48-21 although it only went 2-4 in contested matches. BHS won five times via forfeit and there were two double forfeits in the dual.
Basalt’s two wins came from Zach Pagan over Michael Sandoval at 132 pounds (fall 0:46) and Jobey Esparza over David Serrano at 145 pounds (fall 4:28).
The Longhorns are next scheduled to compete Saturday in a duals tournament at Rifle. Regionals are scheduled for Feb. 9-10 in Alamosa.
