Basalt High wrestling gets two into second round of state tournament

The Basalt High School wrestling team opened play Thursday at the Class 3A state championship meet in Denver, winning two of its three opening-round matches.

Inside the Pepsi Center, BHS senior heavyweight Oswaldo Morales (27-4) needed a tiebreaker, but found a way past Mullen’s Dante Silva (11-7) for the 3-1 decision. Morales will face La Junta’s Nick Martinez (5-9) in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Also winning for Basalt was senior William Rivera (28-9) at 220 pounds. Rivera beat Eagle Valley’s Rowan Sokup via fall in 3:31. He’ll face Salida’s Eli Smith (29-1) in Friday’s quarterfinals. Smith only needed 40 seconds to beat Eaton’s Josue Ortega in the first round.

Basalt’s lone loss came at 195 pounds from senior Thomas Wirth. Wirth, facing top-seeded Faustin Lopez (36-1) of Sheridan, held his own until getting pinned at 4:10.

He’ll get one more chance to compete Friday when he faces Moffat County’s Jefferson Piatt (14-12) in the playbacks.
