Basalt wins Gunnison tourney

Staff report

Call them the champions.

The Basalt U18 softball team won the Gunnison Invitational last weekend against a regional field of teams from across the Western Slope.

The summer Longhorns beat Cortez, Gunnison and Delta in pool play Saturday.

Then, in bracket play on Sunday, the Longhorns beat Delta and a club team from Denver, the Wildcats.

“Our pitching kept us in all the games,” coach Colin Young said. “But really, what carried the weekend was our hitting. The girls hit the cover off the ball.”

He said the Basalt girls were successful against hard throwers as well as off-speed pitchers.

“It was fun to watch,” he said.

The team includes the majority of the Basalt High School softball team, which will open play in August.

Fall practice for prep softball will begin Aug. 12.

The team featured Kylie Fleming, Cassidy Young, Britin Stobel, Jordan DeCrow, Bailey Strobel, Bre Garcia, Brittany Driscoll, Morgan Young, Kaity Johnson, Jamie Briscoe and Tiana Wirth.

The team is coached by Brian DeCrow, Colin Young and Scott Strobel.
