Basalt softball team shines in Eagle Valley

In its final tuneup before 3A Western Slope play begins Saturday, the Basalt softball team traveled to the Eagle Valley Softball Tournament this past weekend. Now, there’s little doubt the Longhorns are ready for league play.Senior starting pitcher Lisa Warnecke led Basalt with her arm and bat in a 15-3 victory over Steamboat Springs Friday. Warnecke struck out five and allowed only four hits and was 2-for-3 at the plate. Senior Cassie Meyer, junior Hailey Guglielmo and freshman Abby King each had two hits. Senior Jennifer Barton and freshman Monique Rodriguez were both 1-for-2 for Basalt.The offense didn’t slow Saturday when the Longhorns overpowered Eagle Valley’s junior varsity squad. Freshman Alexa Aitken allowed one hit and struck out four in a two-inning mercy rule shortened game. Aitken was also 3-for-3 with a single, triple and a homerun. Warnecke had three hits and Meyer and Barton each had two hits. The Longhorns had 16 hits in the 26-3 victory.Basalt travels to Norwood for a doubleheader Saturday.
