Basalt soccer season ends with playoff loss

The Basalt High School boys soccer team had its season come to a close Saturday with a 1-0 loss to host Jefferson Academy in the second round of the Class 3A state tournament.

Basalt, the tournament’s No. 11 seed, defeated No. 22 seed Denver Christian on Friday in the first round. Jefferson Academy, seeded No. 6, had defeated No. 27 William Smith on Friday.

The teams played through a scoreless first half Saturday, before Jefferson Academy’s goal with 25 minutes to play put them ahead. Battling the wind late in the game, the Longhorns could not get the equalizer.

The win sends Jefferson Academy (14-3 overall) into next week’s state quarterfinals against No. 3 seed Colorado Academy. Vail Mountain, seeded No. 4, and Coal Ridge, seeded No. 8, also have advanced to the 3A quarterfinals along with No. 1 seed Kent Denver, No. 2 seed KIPP Denver Collegiate, No. 5 seed Colorado Springs Christian, and No. 7 seed Denver Science and Technology.

Basalt, which won its first playoff game since 2012 on Friday, finished the season with an 11-6 record.
