Basalt soccer beats Denver Christian in playoff game
The Basalt High School boys soccer team took care of business in its Class 3A playoff match, winning 4-2 over Denver Christian on Friday in the first round. The game was played at Jefferson Academy.
It was the first playoff win for the Longhorns since 2012.
“Good, solid victory, for sure. It’s really nice to get through past the first round. It’s been a few years,” Basalt coach Brent Hayes said. “For the most part, we controlled the game.”
The Longhorns (11-5 overall) led 2-1 at halftime and all four of their goals were scored by senior Pedro Rivera.
Basalt, seeded No. 11 in the tournament, will play its second-round game at 1 p.m. today against No. 6 seed Jefferson Academy, the quadrant host. Jefferson Academy defeated No. 27 seed William Smith in the first round Friday, 3-1.
“We watched them a little bit (Friday), and they certainly look like a talented team,” Hayes said. “They play a style we don’t see too often with five midfielders and just three in the back. They didn’t spread it extremely wide on the field. We got to figure out a way to counteract that.”
