Basalt High baseball beats Class 4A Rifle
The Basalt High School baseball team just keeps on winning — league or nonleague.
The Longhorns moved up a classification Friday afternoon and scored a 6-1 victory over Class 4A Rifle in a game at the BHS baseball field.
Basalt scored five runs in the bottom of the second to break open a 1-1 game.
The Longhorns pounded out seven hits and took advantage of four Rifle errors.
The Bears (10-6 overall) had five hits in the nonconference game in Basalt.
Next up for the Longhorns is a home date with Roaring Fork next Tuesday afternoon. The game is a key Class 3A Western Slope League game.
The Basalt High School baseball team will play Aspen next Thursday at Crawford Field in El Jebel.
Then, the Longhorns will head to Olathe for a Western Slope League doubleheader May 3.
Basalt will host Battle Mountain in a nonconfernce game May 6 to close the regular season.
Gunnison continues to lead the Western Slope league with a 12-0 record (13-1 overall). Cedaredge is second at 11-1 (12-1 overall).
Basalt is in third place at 8-4 in the WSL. The Longhorns are 10-4 overall this season under first-year head coach Bud Hickman.
Olathe is next at 7-5 in conference (8-6 overall), making the May 3 doubleheader crucial for both teams.
The dance team traveled this past weekend to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida, for the high school national championships, winning the intermediate varsity pom division on Sunday.
