Basalt girls soccer rolls to 4-0 in league

Basalt’s Shannon Hutton scored two first-half goals in less than two minutes to propel the Lady Longhorns girls soccer team to a 4-1 Class 3A Western Slope League victory over Vail Mountain in Vail last Thursday.

Hutton gave the Longhorns a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. The senior added her second goal in the 12th minute, which proved to be all Basalt would need to secure the victory.

Ukare Sano finished off an Ashley Eaton corner kick to give Basalt a 3-0 advantage at halftime. Maddie Hoffman, who assisted on Hutton’s second goal, wrapped up the Basalt scoring with a tally late in the game.

Autumn Caughern and Darbi Scherer shared time in goal for the Longhorns, with Caughern giving up one goal in 55 minutes and Scherer playing a perfect 25 minutes.

(On Saturday, Basalt’s scheduled game against Roaring Fork was postponed due to snow.)

Basalt improved to 4-0 in league play and 4-1 overall, while Vail Mountain dropped to 2-3 (2-3).

On Tuesday, the Lady Longhorns hit the road to face Grand Junction Central. On Thursday, Basalt hosts Aspen. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
