Basalt girls soccer rolls to 4-0 in league
Basalt’s Shannon Hutton scored two first-half goals in less than two minutes to propel the Lady Longhorns girls soccer team to a 4-1 Class 3A Western Slope League victory over Vail Mountain in Vail last Thursday.
Hutton gave the Longhorns a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. The senior added her second goal in the 12th minute, which proved to be all Basalt would need to secure the victory.
Ukare Sano finished off an Ashley Eaton corner kick to give Basalt a 3-0 advantage at halftime. Maddie Hoffman, who assisted on Hutton’s second goal, wrapped up the Basalt scoring with a tally late in the game.
Autumn Caughern and Darbi Scherer shared time in goal for the Longhorns, with Caughern giving up one goal in 55 minutes and Scherer playing a perfect 25 minutes.
(On Saturday, Basalt’s scheduled game against Roaring Fork was postponed due to snow.)
Basalt improved to 4-0 in league play and 4-1 overall, while Vail Mountain dropped to 2-3 (2-3).
On Tuesday, the Lady Longhorns hit the road to face Grand Junction Central. On Thursday, Basalt hosts Aspen. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Eagle Valley 4, CRMS 1
Cathy Reyes scored two goals for Eagle Valley as the Devils downed Colorado Rocky Mountain School 4-1 in a Class 3A Western Slope League girls soccer game last Thursday in Gypsum.
Eagle Valley led 1-0 after the first half and put the game away with three second-half tallies.
Hanna Farrar notched the only goal for CRMS.
Eagle Valley improved to 3-2 in league play (4-2-1 overall). CRMS moved to 0-4.
Now 40 years old, the downhill racer from Utah is still speeding along with no plans of slowing down anytime soon. Sure, his back sometimes aches but it’s not enough to deter him from chasing after the feeling of a perfect race.
