Basalt girls soccer tops Moffat Co.

The Basalt High School girls soccer team rolled back into the win column with a win over Moffat County this week at the BHS soccer field.

The Longhorns won 3-2 behind goals from sophomores Mariemma Ugguccioni and Callie Card and junior Kaity Johnson.

With the home victory, the BHS girls improved to 3-4-1 overall, 1-1-1 in league heading into next Tuesday’s match against Grand Valley. That game, set for 4 p.m., will be held at the BHS soccer field adjacent to the high school.

“This was an important league game for our team, and the girls stepped up and played great throughout both halves,” Basalt head coach Andrew Huntsman said. “Our defense did a particularly good job in the second half containing Moffat County’s Delaney Baker, the current leading goal-scorer in the league.”

He said the Longhorns created scoring opportunities.

“We are now shifting our focus toward two tough games next week against Grand Valley and CRMS,” Huntsman said. “Our season started off slow with a few tough losses, but the girls show a lot of promise and I think will finish the season strong.”
