Basalt girls rout Roaring Fork 6-1

The Basalt High girls soccer team rebounded from a loss Saturday with a 6-1 win Tuesday over Carbondale’s Roaring Fork High.

Basalt junior Mariah Mulcahy paved the way with a hat trick, and sophomore Ashley Eaton netted one goal and added three assists.

Despite the score, Basalt and Roaring Fork entered the second half tied at 1-1, with seniors Molly McGrath and Stephanie Kemp sitting on the bench with injuries.

“In the first 20 minutes, Roaring Fork came out really strong, put it to us and scored the first goal,” said BHS coach Heather Walker. “But we played much better in the second.

“Our passing finally came together and we got to all the 50-50 balls first,” the coach continued.

Basalt sophomore Shannon Hutton and junior Samantha Hoffman added one goal apiece, while sophomore Megan Stewart had one assist. Sophomore goalie Autumn Caughern, playing her first season of soccer, recorded the win in net.

With the win, Basalt improved to 2-1 on the season. Last Saturday in Grand Junction vs. Grand Junction Central, Basalt lost 3-1. The Aspen High girls, last season’s runnerup to Basalt for the Class 3A Western Slope League Championship, beat Grand Junction Central 3-1 earlier this season.

Basalt host its home-opener against Colorado Rocky Mountain School on Thursday at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Basalt travels to face Eagle Valley.
