Basalt girls hoops rolls past Grand Valley

GRAND VALLEY, Colo. ” Basalt girls basketball coach Carolyn Compton is pleased with way junior post Mackenzie Buck has developed into a double-digit scorer early this season.

Compton would love to see Buck be a little more agressive on the boards, but that can wait until next year. What mattered most Friday night was that the Longhorns, behind Buck’s 18 points, picked up a 55-41 win on the road at Grand Valley in their final game before the holiday break.

“She’s proved she can be a big person scorer, but I also need a big person rebounder,” Compton said. “…She received some wonderful passes from our two guards tonight. She didn’t earn her points off rebounds. That’s where I need her to balance her game out.”

Not only did Basalt’s two starting guards provide Buck with some nice passes, but they also added balance to the Longorns attack. Senior point guard Melissa Stewart finished with 12 points and Katelyn Timroth added eight. Ashley Soucie also had eight points.

The Longhorns were in a tight game in the early going, but gradually built a lead by creating scoring chances off defensive pressure.

“I was pleased,” Compton said. “My girls, they’re playing hard and we’ve grasped some concepts a little better. … They’re growing just like I thought they would.”

The win improved Basalt to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in the 3A Western Slope. The Longhorns’ first game back after the break is at Hotchkiss on Jan. 9.
