Basalt girls clinch share of league title

Aspen Times Staff Report

With a straight-set victory on the road at Olathe in their regular-season finale Friday night, the Basalt High volleyball team clinched a three-way tie for first place in the Class 3A Western Slope League standings.

Basalt bounced Olathe in three games Friday (25-14, 25-16, 25-18) to improve to 6-1 in league play and 15-4 overall. Basalt coach Billy Miller said Eagle Valley and Hotchkiss also concluded their league schedules at 6-1 in league play, meaning all three teams will be waiting expectantly on the seedings for this weekend’s district tournament in Grand Junction.

All eight teams from the 3A WSL will be there, while only two will advance to the 32-team 3A regional tournament, one stop shy of the 3A state tourney.

“They’re going to have to break the tie to seed us [for the district tournament],” Miller said, “but I don’t know how they’re going to do it yet.”

The coach said he expected to hear by Wednesday.

Basalt senior middle blocker Robin Child had nine kills against Olathe, Miller said, and setter Amanda Schmitt recorded 19 assists.

“It’s been a great season,” Miller said, “and we’re going to take it as far as we can.”
