Basalt flattens Paonia in soccer opener

Where to start? The Basalt boys’ soccer team beat Paonia so badly Tuesday that it forced coach Eric Streff to take out a player for every goal after his team’s seventh. The Longhorns dominance was so complete that the team actually ended up with fewer players on the field (eight) than goals (10) when the final whistle blew.Streff said his team (2-1, 1-0) wanted to come out in its 3A Western Slope opener and pick up where it left off after last season’s 9-0-1 run to the conference championship. That strategy didn’t include being subtle.”Our guys just worked real hard,” Streff said. “Knowing that it was the first league game this year, we wanted to take off on a good foot.”The ‘Horns got goals from eight players, including two apiece from freshmen Kyle Wood and junior Ryan Zubizaretta. Senior keeper Jamie Wirkler also stood out, picking up his second shutout of the season with four saves. Wirkler also added a goal, his first of the season. The other players to knock in goals were junior Trevor Brown, senior Felipe Sanchez, senior Alex Giglio, senior David Strickbine and senior Brett Boyle. After the seven-point first half, Streff played reserves during most of the second. That strategy still didn’t stop Basalt players from putting balls in the back of the Paonia net – even if it meant another player had to come off the field with each score.Basalt next plays at Roaring Fork at 4 p.m. today, and the team hosts Vail Mountain School at 11 a.m. Saturday.Nate Peterson can be reached at
