Basalt boys fall short against Coal Ridge in district finals

The Basalt High School boys basketball team came up short in Saturday’s district championship game, falling 57-55 to Coal Ridge in a game played at Grand Junction Central High School.

BHS, now 19-3 overall, has lost twice this season to Coal Ridge, which edged the Longhorns for the Class 3A Western Slope League regular-season title. Despite the loss, Basalt is already guaranteed a spot in the 3A regional tournament. Those pairings should be announced in the next day, with games starting Friday.

Basalt trailed Coal Ridge most of Saturday’s game. The Titans led 14-13 after a quarter, 32-27 at halftime and 45-38 after three. BHS did rally late, however, but a 3-pointer in the final seconds bounced harmlessly off the back iron to preserve Coal Ridge’s victory.

Also Saturday, the Basalt girls basketball team was given the 3A WSL Sportsmanship Award. In its second year, it’s given in the name of Dennis Fraser, a former athletic director at Gunnison who died in 2015.
