Basalt boys basketball to play University in first round of regionals
The Basalt High School boys basketball team will face University in the first round of the Class 3A regional tournament on Friday in a game hosted by Denver School of Science and Technology: Green Valley Ranch.
The Longhorns (19-3) earned the No. 9 overall seed in 3A after taking second in their district tournament over the weekend. BHS lost 57-55 to Coal Ridge in the championship game Saturday; the Titans are the No. 7 seed and will host No. 26 Frontier Academy in the first round.
Also earning regional bids out of the WSL are Roaring Fork (18 seed, play at No. 15 Manual) and Delta (28 seed, play at No. 5 Bayfield). Kent Denver (19-3) and Manitou Springs (20-2) are the first and second overall seeds, respectively.
University, based out of Greeley, is 13-9 and plays out of the Patriot League. University is the No. 24 seed in the 32-team tournament.
The winner of Friday’s Basalt-University game would play Saturday against the winner of No. 8 Denver SST:GVR (18-4) and No. 25 Pinnacle (14-8).
The Longhorns played at Green Valley Ranch as recently as Feb. 1, winning 62-47.
The regional winner will move on to the state basketball tournament, which begins March 9 at the Hamilton Gym on the University of Denver campus.
