Basalt baseball tops Aspen

The Basalt Longhorns prevailed in the upper-Roaring Fork Valley baseball rivalry this week.

The Basalt High School baseball team defeated Aspen 9-4 at the BHS field, powered by a pair of home runs.

Tucker Schoon hit a two-run homer over the left-field fence.

The second home run came in the bottom of the sixth inning by Michael Glenn.

Glen had three hits and five RBIs in the Tuesday night win.

Noah Schoenberger had a double and drove in two for Basalt.

Basalt’s Logan Conley had a hit and scored a run. Miles Levy had a base hit. Ben Haag had two hits and scored two runs.

Schoenberger pitched five innings. Glenn closed out the game with the last two innings.

Basalt coach Bud Hickman said Clayton Montgomery, who drew two walks and scored twice, also made an outstanding running catch on a fly ball to left field.

Adrian Lujan singled and scored two runs as Basalt improved to 6-7 overall, 5-4 in the Western Slope League.

“It was a team effort, and we made the plays when needed,” Hickman said.

Aspen fell to 0-9 on the season. The Skiers now are off until April 22.

Basalt will head to Craig for a doubleheader against Moffat County on Saturday.

The Longhorns were coming off a doubleheader loss last weekend to powerhouse Gunnison 10-1 and 11-1.

Raul Torres had two hits in the first game for Basalt. Dylan Gressett drove in the Basalt run in the second game.
