The Aspen Times
Aspen High School golfer Will Hazen won the Class 3A title Wednesday at the annual Rifle Invitational at Rifle Creek.
Hazen shot a 73 to lead the Skiers to the 3A team title.
Aspen posted a score of 236 to lead the 3A entries. Vail Mountain School finished second at 247.
Vail Christian was third at 254.
Coal Ridge from New Castle was at 275 followed by Rangely (278), Basalt (287) and Grand Valley (324).
Trey Robinson shot a 77 for Aspen to support Hazen’s 73.
Henry Ferguson, a freshman, shot 86. Davis Henschel shot 88, and Sydney Slossberg added an 89 for Aspen.
Hazen was second overall behind Class 4A’s Will Firestone of Steamboat Springs, who shot a 72.
“I was swinging it pretty good today,” Hazen said.
“I hit a lot of greens.”
He said he maintained through the challenging back nine at Rifle Creek.
“It’s a difficult back nine. It’s different golf from the front nine,” Hazen said.
He said Robinson had a very solid round with his 77.
And, Hazen said, freshman Ferguson posted a great score on the tricky Rifle Creek course.
Steamboat Springs won the 4A division with a composite 225.
Palisade was next at 260 followed by Moffat County at 271.
Battle Mountain shot 285.
Linc Kleager led Basalt with an 86. Roger Gauthier shot 87.
A local kid got on the X Games Aspen podium on Sunday night, but it wasn’t the one most people expected. Even Jon Sallinen didn’t think he’d be taking home a medal.
