Aspen’s Hazen 2nd at Rifle

Senior Will Hazen of Aspen High School shot a 77 on Thursday at Rifle Creek to finish second individually in the annual Rifle Invitational prep golf tournament.

The Skiers, as a team, posted the top score among Class 3A high schools and finished third overall with a three-player total of 253.

Host Rifle won with a composite 246. Summit was second at 250, three shots ahead of the Skiers.

Burke Daily and Sydney Slossberg, both seniors, shot matching 88s for the Skiers.

Juniors Edwin Ecclestone and Hayes Kennedy added 92s for Aspen.

Jacob Smith of Rifle was the individual medalist with a 75.

Hazen was second with Rifle’s Carter Wyatt third with a 78.

“It wasn’t our best performance, but given the challenging course today … we got the job done,” Aspen head coach Mary Woulfe said.

She said the Skiers started on the challenging back nine at Rifle Creek, a tough test for prep players.

Hazen played a strong front nine to rally for second place.

The Aspen JV team continues to play well from the forward tees, Woulfe said.

The Skiers will return home to host the Aspen Invitational on Wednesday at the Aspen Golf Course.
