Aspen’s Beetham wins again in Cortez

On Wednesday, Jesse Beetham and the Aspen golf team got their first glimpse of Cortez’s Conquistador Golf Course, site of September’s regionals.

“I really liked it,” Beetham remarked Thursday. “The course is in great shape, and I think it’s very fun and accessible. I think you can definitely get a good score out there if you’re hitting it straight.”

The senior proved that Wednesday. He recorded two early birdies, overcame a bad break and closed on a consistent note, carding an even-par 72 to tie a Cortez player for medalist honors. Beetham has won his last three tournaments.

That effort, coupled with a 75 from Clayton Crawford and a 79 from August So, helped the Skiers clinch a sixth consecutive 3A team title.

“I’m feeling very good. I’m starting to figure out some things, and it’s really starting to pay off,” said Beetham, who has produced rounds of even par or better in his past three tournaments. “My swing path really has been off, but just recently I started to get on the right track.”

He had it going early Wednesday, moving to 2-under at one point during his front nine. He caught a bad lie in a greenside bunker at No. 9, however, and walked off with a double bogey.

Beetham was 1-under for much of the back nine until slipping up once more at No. 16; he pushed his 6-iron off the tee at the difficult 195-yard par-3 and could not get up and down.

He held it together from there to finish even and settle for a tie.

“They didn’t do a playoff for some reason,” Beetham said. “I’ve never seen that happen. I was ready. I was hitting some putts and would’ve liked to play, but any victory is a good victory, even if you have to share.”
