Aspen tennis rolls at Delta
The Aspen tennis team can’t be stopped. The Skiers, 6-0 as a team thus far this season in league play, continued their winning ways Friday at the nine-team Delta County Tournament. All three singles players and all four doubles teams went undefeated in match play to advance to today’s seven finals. The Skiers singles players were Sean Chatellard at No. 1, King Koehler at No. 2 and Glen Engelmann at No. 3. The doubles teams were Cole Greensmith and Logan Taylor at No. 1, Aaron Cummins and Ryan Dunn at No. 2, Stephen Boenning and Chris Taylor at No. 3 and Remy Pearlstone and Tyler Roos at No. 4.Aspen has won the Delta tournament the last two years and looks primed for a three-peat, said head coach Sherill Kerr. Montrose is the only other team capable of taking the team title from Aspen. The Indians earned spots in four of the finals against Aspen.”Obviously, I’d like to get a third,” Kerr said. “The boys have been playing wonderful. With this tournament, the problem is they don’t seed it, so you don’t know who you are going to meet. In some cases we met Montrose early and won tough matches, and in other cases we’ll meet Montrose in the final.”The Skiers league wins so far this season include impressive defeats of bigger schools, including a 4-3 defeat of 5A Fruita Monument and victory against 4A Eaton. The team also finished third at the non-league Fountain Valley tournament in Colorado Springs. All four junior varsity teams that Kerr brought with her to Delta also went undefeated Friday to make the finals today. After today’s finals, the Skiers next play Saturday against Durango in Grand Junction.
The Skiers gridders weren’t the only ones to suffer from the 5-hour bus ride to Gunnison. The Aspen volleyball team dropped its match at Gunnison Friday night, losing in four games, 25-15, 22-25, 25-12, 25-22.The loss dropped the Skiers to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.Nate Peterson’s e-mail address is email@example.com.
