Aspen tennis is unbeaten no more

Aspen Times Staff Report

The Aspen High girls tennis team dropped its first head-to-head match of the season to Durango on Saturday at the Maroon Creek Club.

In losing five matches to two against the larger Class 5A Durango, Aspen slipped to 7-1 on the season in head-to-head match play.

“It was a tough match,” said AHS coach Sherril Kerr. “It’s a good learning experience. Those girls had big powerful serves and it was tough to handle.”

Aspen’s No. 2 doubles pair of Jacqueline Pearlstone and Brittany Biebl won their match in straight sets, and Aspen’s No. 3 doubles team of Courtney Sheeley and Jeniffer Leddy won in three sets.

“It was some of the best tennis they’ve played,” Kerr said. “Good smart play.”

All of Aspen’s singles player – Teige Muhfield at No. 1, Melissa Marcus at No. 2 and Becca Cote at No. 3 – lost in straight sets, Kerr said, a fate shared by Aspen’s No. 1 doubles team (Alex Leddy and Nicole Hernandez) and the No. 4 doubles team (Christina Schulter and Meredith Hanrahan).

“The whole Durango team is really deep and strong,” Kerr said. “The good news is that they’re not in our region. And it’s kind of a wakeup call.”

Aspen travels to Glenwood on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. match. On Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Maroon Creek Club, the AHS girls host their final home match of the season against Roaring Fork.
