Aspen sprinter Abarca wins conference titles

Sunday Abarca of Aspen High School heads for the finish line and first place in the 400-meter dash Saturday during the Western Slope League Championships at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction. He won the 400 in 49.93 seconds. Abarca also won the 200 at the league meet.

Aspen High School sprinter Sunday Abarca doubled up Saturday at the Western Slope League Championships at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction.

Abarca, a sophomore, won the 400-meter dash Saturday in a blazing 49.93 seconds, one of the top times in the state.

Later, Abarca won the 200-meter dash at Stocker Stadium. He was timed in 22.18 with some hand-times showing him under 22 seconds – again one of the top times in the state.



The State Track and Field Championships are upcoming May 14-16 in Lakewood.
