Aspen High School sophomore Zoe Guthrie surged up the leaderboard Tuesday on the final day of the Class 3A girls state golf tournament, shooting a 17-over-par 88 to finish in 23rd place at Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield.
Guthrie, competing in her first state tournament, shot a 30-over-par 101 in the first round on Monday, finishing the day tied for 31st. She ended the tournament at 47-over-par with a cumulative score of 189.
“She showed lots of perseverance under the stress of tournament conditions during the state finals,” AHS girls golf coach Don Buchholz said. “I am so proud of her performance.”
Holy Family freshman Hailey Schalk cruised to the individual 3A title, winning by seven strokes over Kent Denver’s Charlotte Hillary. Schalk shot a 3-under-par 139 (65-74), the only player to shoot under par for the tournament.
With four golfers in the top 10, Colorado Academy blew by the field to win the team title, shooting a collective 21-over-par 447. Holy Family was second, 28 strokes back.
This was the first season Colorado had a 3A classification for girls golf.
