Aspen soccer beats CRMS 5-2

Aspen Times Staff Report

Rebounding from a 5-1 defeat at Vail Mountain last Thursday, the Aspen High boys soccer team downed the Colorado Rocky Mountain School (CRMS) 5-2 on Saturday in Carbondale.

AHS freshman Stephen Buzbee snapped a four-game scoring drought by scoring four goals Saturday. Junior Gabriel Grisolia also scored for Aspen, and sophomore goalie Fred Barnard got the win in net.

“The kids played well,” said Grant “Junior” Sutherland, who coaches Aspen with John Gillies. “I think they were embarrassed by getting beat so bad in Vail, so they played hard right from the start. And Buzbee’s confidence was getting low, but he bounced back quite well.”

Aspen improved to 4-2 in Class 3A Western Slope League and 5-5 overall.

“Rodrigo Chiarelo had his best game for Aspen High School,” contributing two assists among other things, Sutherland noted.

In the league standings, Aspen remains the No. 2 team behind No. 1 Basalt, ahead of No. 3 Eagle Valley and No. 4 Vail Mountain, Sutherland said. And with four games remaining on Aspen’s league schedule, including a match at Eagle Valley on Tuesday, Aspen controls its own destiny heading toward the playoffs.

“We’ve got to concentrate on every game, and particularly we’ve got to be prepared for a tough, physical battle Tuesday at Eagle Valley,” Sutherland said. “Every team seems to have a battle with them.”
