Aspen rugby reigns among ski towns

Ski towns of the central Rocky Mountains compete in all sorts of ways: Proximities to Interstate highways, annual accumulations of snowfall, difficulty and diversity of ski/ride-able terrain, access to backcountry, vertical drop, etc. Then there’s the annual Ski Town Tournament, which shifts from site-to-site among those central Rockies towns that boast rugby teams as well as ski lifts (and the aforementioned debatables). And while Aspen’s preeminence is questionable on certain fronts therein, Aspen still has it in terms of rugby. At the ump-teenth annual edition of the Ski Town Tourney over the weekend, hosted by Vail, the Gentlemen of Aspen Rugby Football Club dominated all comers. The Gents opened the affair with a 60-0 thumping of Breckenridge. Aspen then proceeded to mow over Glenwood Defiance 45-0 for the right to advance to the finals of the eight-team affair. To make things interesting, Vail also advanced to the final on the other side of the bracket. But then the Gents wasted them too, 35-15.”The boys played well,” said Aspen summer-league player/coach Mark Williams. “The standouts were Nick Lane, Sean Maguire, Travis Butler and Brian McShane.”Glenwood gave the valley a 1-3 finish by beating Santa Fe 30-20 in the third-place consolation match.Meanwhile, in Oklahoma City, Okla., Aspen’s 7’s team qualified for a spot in the 7’s national championship tournament, slated for Aug. 13 in Pennsylvania.”It was a pretty good weekend for the club,” said Williams.
