Aspen, Roaring Fork tie 0-0

The Aspen and Roaring Fork girls soccer teams played to a 0-0 tie after 80 minutes of regulation and an overtime period Thursday afternoon in Carbondale.Aspen coach John Gillies said Aspen was lucky to escape with a draw.”Roaring Fork had four, clear one-on-ones on our goal, and our goal keeper, Carly Magill, just pulled off miraculous saves,” he said.Aspen stands at 2-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in Class 3A Western Slope League play. Roaring Fork is 0-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league.”Typical after-spring break performance for us,” said Gillies. “Some of these girls should have brought their surfboards because you never would’ve known they weren’t still in Mexico. But credit to Roaring Fork – they should have beat us.”Aspen’s Haley Ortman was “outstanding in the backs,” Gillies said, and the sisters Hassell, Julia and Emily, “played solid as usual.””We just weren’t there today. If we want to take some positives from it, it was a clean sheet – we never conceded any goals. But we never really turned up on the park, either, we didn’t play any good soccer.”Aspen travels to face Vail Mountain at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Aspen faces the Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale at 4 p.m. on Monday, then Basalt on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the BHS field.”By the time we reach Basalt, we should be back into soccer mode,” said Gillies. “At least, we better.”Tim Mutrie’s e-mail address is mutrie@aspentimes.com
