Aspen locals open Winter X Games

The 2016 Winter X Games at Buttermilk with kick off Thursday with a special locals’ night.

Two Aspen skiers will launch into the spotlight Thursday in the men’s ski superpipe competition at Buttermilk.

Alex Ferreira of Aspen, who finished with a bronze medal in the superpipe last year, will be back and going for gold Thursday night at 6 p.m. He is scheduled to be joined by Aspen native Torin Yater-Wallace, who generated his career with Winter X Games medals in Aspen.

Action will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday with a Special Olympics event, unified snowboarding final.

The snowmobiles will roll into focus at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, starting with the adaptive division.

The regular snowmobile racers will take off at 4 p.m. Thursday in the snocross eliminations and final.

The sporting events will warm up the crowd for a pair of opening-night concerts at the Buttermilk venue.

Run the Jewels will take the stage at 8 p.m., according to the Winter X schedule.

Nas is scheduled to perform at 9:30 p.m. Thursday.
