Aspen Leafs pick up pair of wins over the weekend
The Aspen Leafs U20 junior hockey team swept the visiting Steamboat Wranglers over the weekend, winning 7-3 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday. Both games were played at Lewis Ice Arena.
In Friday’s win, Aspen native Charlie Van Allen recorded his first hat trick of the season for the Leafs. He also had one assist. Tommy Bowe had two goals in that game, with Boston Lindlahr and Nolan Willoughby getting the others. Alec Johnson had three assists.
Saturday’s contest was more competitive. Brenden Polaski gave the Leafs a 1-0 lead, but the Wranglers answered to tie the game at 1-1 after a period. After a scoreless second period, Polaski got his second goal in the third, but Steamboat again answered, and the game went to overtime. In the overtime period, it was again Polaski who stepped up, his third goal being the game winner. Van Allen led the team with two assists.
The wins improve Aspen’s record to 6-4-1 overall, which is second in the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League. Pikes Peak remains the team to beat at 11-0.
The Leafs will be back in action with a three-game series in Monument against the Colorado Rampage beginning Friday. Aspen will host the Pikes Peak Miners the following weekend for a two-game series.
