Aspen Leafs hockey sweeps Rampage to open 2017 slate
The Aspen Leafs U20 hockey team opened 2017 with a two-game sweep of the visiting Colorado Rampage over the weekend. The games, played at Lewis Ice Arena, were a benefit for Aspen Strong.
In Friday’s 7-3 win — it was Aspen’s first game since Dec. 17 — the Leafs trailed 2-0 early in the second period before rattling off three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead entering the third period. Two goals to open the final stretch put the game out of reach.
Tommy Bowe provided the bulk of the offense, scoring four of Aspen’s goals. Brett Hawkins, Boston Lindlahr and Nolan Willoughby each had one.
Saturday, Aspen won 6-4 in comeback fashion. Trailing 1-0, the Rampage scored three straight goals to take a commanding lead. Aspen scored four straight goals to finish the second period, however, to take a 5-3 lead to the third period. The Rampage pulled within a goal early in the final period, but another Aspen goal in the final minute silenced any rally.
Cory Kane led the way with two of Aspen’s goals. Jarrett McDonald, Alec Johnson, Hawkins and Bowe each had one.
The wins improve Aspen to 14-9-1 overall, keeping them firmly in second place in the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League. Next, the Leafs play a three-game series beginning Friday at the first-place Pikes Peak Miners. Aspen’s next home game isn’t until Feb. 10, when it again hosts the Rampage.
