Aspen Junior Hockey Midgets win regional

Aspen Junior Hockey’s Midget Minor A team beat the top-seeded Colorado Eagles twice Sunday in Lakewood to become the top team in the Continental Divide Youth Hockey League.

The Midgets first upset of the Eagles came in an overtime thriller Sunday morning. With 3:43 remaining in the third period, Aspen’s Jimmy Ayers punched in a goal to knot the score at 4-4 and force overtime.Eight minutes into the extra period, Aspen’s Joey Cathcart scored the game winner, dealing the Eagles their first loss of the season.

The second loss came only a few hours later in a rematch to decide the regional championship.

The Eagles scored their only goal of the game to take the lead in the first period. In the second, Aspen’s Gaelen Means slapped in the equalizer, then a few seconds later, Aspen team captain Taylor Feldman scored the winning goal in the 2-1 victory.Aspen now moves on to the state championships Saturday at Summit Ice Arena in Breckenridge.
