Aspen hosts U14 state tournament for girls

The under-14 girls state hockey championship game Sunday at Lewis Ice Arena might be an Aspen versus Aspen matchup.Entering today’s state tournament, both local teams sit atop the nine-team league standings. Only the top four teams qualified for this weekend’s tournament. After a round-robin tournament today and Saturday, the two teams with the best records will advance to championship game at 10 a.m. Sunday.The Aspen 2 team has outscored its opponents 62-12 this season and enters the tournament with a league-best 13-1 record. The Aspen 1 team has a record of 12-2 after outscoring opponents 53-16 this season.If one of the two local teams is to win the title, it would be the fifth in the history of the Aspen Junior Hockey program.Aspen 2 opens the tournament at 5:45 p.m. today against the Colorado Select Green (9-5). Aspen 1 plays Colorado Springs (10-3) at 7 p.m.Aspen 2 will play Colorado Springs at 9 a.m. Saturday, followed by Aspen 1 playing the Colorado Select Green at 10:15. Both out-of-town teams will then play at 5:45 p.m., followed by an all-Aspen matchup at 7 p.m.
