AHS skiers load up on state honors

On the heels of two third-place finishes at the state meet in Steamboat Springs last month, the Aspen High School ski teams each brought home two of the top individual honors for the season.

Aspen sophomore Margo McHugh was named the girls’ alpine skier of the year, while fellow AHS sophomore Trey Thorpe was named the boys’ alpine skier of the year, alongside Vail Mountain’s Michael Resnick.

McHugh had two strong races at state, taking second in both the slalom and giant slalom. She lost the giant slalom to teammate Mariel Gorsuch.

Thorpe was equally as strong for the boys at state, taking third in the GS and second in the slalom. Resnick was second and third in those two races, respectively.

Making first team all state for the AHS girls were McHugh (GS, SL), Gorsuch (GS), Devan McSwain (GS), India Cardamone (SL) and Chelsea Moore (skate, classic). Named to the second team were Pascale Augspurger (GS) and Estelle Sweeney (SL). Thorpe (GS, SL) was the lone first-team all-state skier for the AHS boys. Everett Olson (skate) made second team.

The ski teams success at state came after the AHS girls swim team won the 3A state title. Aspen swim coach Kathleen Callahan was named the 3A coach of the year following the meet, while Harvard-bound senior Kennidy Quist was named the 3A swimmer of the year. Quist, Hannah Freeman, Emily Driscoll and Davy Brown were all named 3A first-team all state.
