The streaking Aspen High School hockey team will test No. 1 today.

The Skiers (8-7 overall, 7-7 in the Foothills League) will host unbeaten and top-ranked Monarch in a 4 p.m. showcase at Lewis Ice Arena at the Aspen Recreation Center (ARC).

“It should be a lot of fun,” Aspen head coach Dru Lucchesi said as his squad prepared to take on the 13-0 Monarch Coyotes from Louisville. “We’ve got a … new system to run against them.”

The Aspen hockey team is rolling on a five-game winning streak.

“We’re a young team … the guys are getting used to our system,” Lucchesi said of the Aspen streak that included victories over Chatfield (6-4), Mullen (2-0), Standley Lake (5-3), Kent Denver (4-3) and Columbine (2-0).

“We’ve been getting (scoring) through all of our lines. And our defense has been scoring,” Lucchesi said, adding that the Skiers have had solid goaltending as they position themselves for postseason play.

The Skiers currently are in the final, eighth playoff spot from the Foothills League. Aspen has games remaining at Summit and at Battle Mountain.

“We’re hoping to peak at the right time, like last year,” Lucchesi said.
