Aspen High hockey team qualifies for state playoffs

The Aspen High School hockey team clinched a berth in the state playoffs Friday night with a 4-0 victory over rival Battle Mountain (Vail) at the Lewis Ice Arena.

Arthur Kelso scored two goals and assisted on another as the Skiers improved to 9-8-0 overall, 6-6-0 in the Foothills League.

Ryan Fitzgerald and Nicky Cottrell also scored for the Skiers. Charlie Van Allen assisted on Cottrell’s final goal with 10.2 seconds to play.

Kelso’s second goal 38 seconds into the third period extended Aspen’s lead to 2-0.

Evan Morris collected the shutout in goal behind the Aspen defense.

Battle Mountain moved to 6-7-1 in conference, 10-8-1 overall.

The Skiers outshot the Huskies 36-24.

Aspen will close the regular season today with a 4 p.m. game against Summit High School. The game will be played at the Lewis Ice Arena at the Aspen Recreation Center (ARC).
