Aspen High boys win first Nordic race of the season
The Aspen High School Nordic ski team opened its season Saturday with a 5-kilometer classic race at Snow Mountain Ranch near Winter Park.
The Skier boys finished with 168 points, edging out Summit’s 162 points. Middle Park was third with 159 points.
The first-place Skiers received a first-place performance out of Jack Sweeney, who won the boys’ race with a time of 17 minutes, 58 seconds, only a second ahead of Vail Mountain School’s Eric Zdechlik. Aspen’s Colt Whitley took third in 18:02.
Everett Olson was next best for the Skiers, taking 11th in the 107-athlete field.
The Aspen girls tied with Summit for third, each scoring 146 points. Colorado Rocky Mountain School was first with 175 points, while Lake County was third with 149 points.
CRMS had three in the top five, led by Kate Oldham’s first-place time of 22:22. Aspen’s top finisher was Jozie Wille in sixth, followed by a ninth-place finish from Adair Pattillo. Hazel Wille, who took 27th in the field of 101 skiers, was the third point scorer for Aspen.
Aspen next competes Saturday at the Tennessee Pass Nordic Center, a race hosted by Lake County.
