Aspen High boys tennis opens with pair of wins

Aspen Times Staff Report

The Aspen High School boys tennis team opened the fall season in style Saturday with victories over Delta and Hotchkiss in Delta.

Aspen’s four doubles pairs won all their matches, including Jeff Erwin and Alex Wells at No. 1, Will Otte and Nick Redmond at No. 2, David Gull and Knute Gregory at No. 3 and Bradley Cummins and Jesse Amory at No. 4, as Aspen topped both Delta and Hotchkiss five matches to two.

Aspen’s No. 3 singles player Cotton Koehler won both of his matches as well.

“We were missing our No. 1 and 2 singles players, so it could’ve been 7-0,” Aspen coach Sherril Kerr said, referring to Andy Trautner and Morgan Williams, respectively.

“It wasn’t the strongest competition we’ll see,” Kerr continued. “We know what some of our weaknesses were going into it, and we know we still have some things to work on. It gave us a to-do list for sure.”

On Friday at 3 p.m., Aspen hosts its first match of the season vs. Cedaredge at the new clay courts near the new the Aspen Golf Club facility. Kerr said the six new courts are a great improvement over the two Iselin courts, Aspen’s former home base.

“We can actually spread out and work on some things,” she said. “It’s wonderful.”

The AHS team, some 19 players strong, has been practicing since Aug. 12. A junior varsity match between Aspen and Cedaredge will coincide with Friday’s varsity match at the new courts.
