Aspen High baseball wins thriller in opener

High school baseball opened for area teams last weekend.

The Aspen Skiers, playing on their home field in El Jebel, started the new season with a thrilling 2-1 victory over visiting Moffat County.

Senior pitcher Tristan Niskanen pitched seven innings in the victory, striking out 17 Bulldogs.

He gave up only two hits in the complete-game win.

Niskanen put the Skiers on the board in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single scoring junior Harry Kahn.

Moffat County tied the game in the fifth.

With the game 1-1, Aspen senior Andy Vernier led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single to right.

A bunt from Jud Hawk forced Vernier at second.

Charlie Guilander singled to left for Aspen.

After a strikeout, sophomore Jamison Fuentes came to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the sevennth.

He drove a single to right field scoring Hawk from second base and giving Aspen the victory.

This week, the Skiers play at Cedaredge and then travel to Olathe for a Saturday doubleheader.

In other games last weekend, Basalt dropped a doubleheader to visiting Coal Ridge losing 7-4 and 12-1.

Basalt will play again on March 31, hosting Grand Valley.
